Short Story Preview: Midnight Madness – Josie Arden
‘That Charlie Keller’s in the paper again,’ I heard father telling mother over breakfast.
‘Oh? What’s he done now? He’s only just out of borstal! Something worse than scrumping, was it?’
I didn’t catch his reply because Chukka started barking. I hoped it was nothing too bad. I couldn’t, of course, tell my parents that I had a secret date with Charlie in the boathouse of Willaton Park lake that night at midnight. He and I met frequently in the park woods in the school holidays and I had grown rather fond of him. I admired his tearaway life style. Nothing seemed to frighten him.
I heard my mother say, ‘Well he won’t be scrumping from our garden after all that broken glass you’ve set onto the wall.’
Make mental note: As well as bath towel take bedside rug to cover broken glass tonight.
