Short Story Preview: Incident at a Bus-Stop
He had rushed that morning, unwise with a dicky heart, snatched a cup of coffee and wasted time hunting for his bus-pass. When he finally reached the stop, his head was swimming and he felt nauseous – often a prelude to one of his ‘turns’.
Trembling, he felt himself sway – the sky press down on his head, thunder roar in his ears and a desire to throw up.
When he came to, a woman wearing a balaclava was bending over him and peering into his face.
‘I haven’t any money!’ Bowlby croaked, his heart in his mouth. ‘But you can have my watch. It’s in full working order, and worth a few bob.’
She took him firmly under the shoulders and pulled him to his feet.
