Pippi Longstocking
I first came across Pippi Longstocking as Pippi Langkous, the Afrikaans version – it was one of those names that just stuck. So, I was rather intrigued when I came across the name in the opening pages of Anna Ryland’s A Second Chance.
This got me digging a bit and I discovered Pippi Longstocking was the character in Swedish author Astrid Lindgren’s book Pippi Longstocking, and there’s going to be an English translation of a Japanese TV series based on another book by Astrid Lindgren. I wonder if Ronya will do as well as Pippi has?
I haven’t read any of the Pippi Longstocking books, but was taken by the idea of her being different and doing her own thing is this article on quotes from Pippi Longstocking. I’ll have to add it to my ‘To get sometime pile’ – that is the list which remains to be purchased so the items can join the ‘to read sometime’ pile…
I’m sure Pippi features in a number of other books, but they’re rather difficult to track down. I did find one other though: Stieg Larsson apparently based one of his characters on Pippi though. But I can’t see me reading this one.
