Writing: The origin of stories

Reading groups (and factual writers like myself) often wonder where authors get their ideas from. Frustratingly authors tend to give vague responses, such as ‘the idea just came to me’, or ‘I had a phrase in mind and from that the story developed, taking a life of it’s own’.
The quote below sums it up beautifully:

The Good Vicar
Broken Ties of Time
A Boy’s War Journal
