Short Story Preview: Where the Bee Sucks
The king was in his counting house counting out his money, the queen was in the parlour eating bread and …
‘Where’s my honey!’ she screamed.
The king sighed, ‘Not again!’
He left off counting and wearily made his way to his bed chamber. So much gold, so many riches and such a frightful wife.
He took two wax ear-plugs from his bedside drawer, stuck them deep into his ears and lay down. Leaning across the bed he opened a large box of chocolates, a gift from the king of Spain. His eyes ran over the selection of goodies. Ah! A mint creme. He picked it, bit it, savoured the sharp sweet taste. There was nothing like sugar to calm the nerves. He was about to choose another, when the door flung open and there the queen stood, her face black with rage.
‘When will you sort out your bees Bertram? It’s mid-summer and there should be a large supply of honey. I have nothing to put on my bread. And what are you doing lying down when you should be standing up and counting our money. We need every coin we can get. There is a recession if you hadn’t noticed.’
