‘Why are you sitting on the hamper?’ he asks.
‘Just resting,’ I say.
‘You’ll dent it! Move yourself. I want to check.’
‘No need. Everything’s there.’
Please God the lid doesn’t give way.
‘Roger and Jemima coming?’
‘You know they are.’
He scans the room as though checking for missiles.
I jump. ‘Flowers?’
‘You haven’t picked any.’
‘Their garden’s awash with flowers. Why add to them?’
He sighs. Looks at his problem wife sitting, buttocks clenched on his beloved food hamper.
