‘Don’t be fribble Sybil. Choose something with less neck.’
‘Surely more neck is acceptable for cocktail parties?’ I reasoned.
But Great Aunt Beryl was having none of it. I turned the dress around. The neck was low yes, but might it, at a pinch, look more acceptable worn back to front? High back low front could translate as high front, low back. Such a divine style too. And it was a Pierre Balmain. Frivolous? Maybe just a little. I sighed and returned the pink rayon damask to its hanger. Perhaps Aunt was right, and she was paying after all.
‘We could try Swan and Edgar’s, Sibyl. And you can get a nice tea there. Come on, my treat.’
‘You don’t have to buy me tea Aunt, just because you were rude about the dress.’
‘I know, but I want to and it’s Christmas and you’re my favourite niece. So quick march!’
