A pool of water stands between us … small, transparent and round.
I stare. He stares.
‘We should have had a survey done. We should.’
‘We decided to skip the survey, remember? A bargain like this doesn’t come along every day. Fetch a bucket, Anne.’
‘We haven’t got a bucket.’
‘The washing up bowl then.’
He’s snappy now, leaning across me to get to the sink.
‘Shall I ring for a plumber?’ I offer.
‘Do you know a plumber, Anne?’
‘Not personally, no. But there’s Yellow Pages.’
